Learning How English Works

Event Date

Location
Yolo County Office of Education, 1280 Santa Anita Court, Woodland

This statewide CRLP signature offering equips teachers with the knowledge and resources they need to provide ELD in the context of their content instruction through a deep dive into Part 2 of the California English Language Development (ELD) Standards. Teachers learn to analyze the language demands of their content texts and design language mini-lessons that address the Part 2 ELD Standards through linguistically responsive routines. Teachers also practice analyzing student work through a language lens and planning instruction that builds on students’ linguistic assets and responds to their needs. Learning How English Works is appropriate for teachers in grades K-12.

Focusing on Part 2 of the California ELD Standards, this three-day institute provides:

  • A deep dive into the seven Part 2 Standards, using materials that break down the standards with examples from content texts at a range of grade levels
  • A framework for planning instruction that supports multilingual learners’ language development as well
as their comprehension of content text
  • A protocol for analyzing student work with a focus on language to inform instruction
